Trump threatens our climate

As COP29 is getting underway in Baku and Trump is deciding who will be in his cabinet, many are rightly concerned how his presidency will affect the efforts to combat the ongoing climate crisis.

The threat to our precious Earth home

Back in 2022 when he launched his campaign, Trump showed that he had not learned a thing from the climate disasters happening around the world, saying that “The Green New Deal and the environment, which they say may affect us in 300 years, is all that is talked about”. He clearly does not understand the urgency.

Last time round he appointed 3 justices to the Supreme Court who crippled the EPA’s ability to regulate carbon emissions in West Virginia v. EPA. Two of his older justices will likely retire once he takes office, but he will no doubt replace them with ones with the same priorities, only younger. A Trump-appointed judge ordered Biden to resume oil and gas leasing in public lands and waters in 1921. Biden reversed a lot of Trump’s damaging policies, but no doubt Trump will reinstate them. There is no practical way that Biden can expand the Supreme Court or get different justices appointed, unfortunately.

Elon Musk will help him. Since he bought Twitter, he has allowed vicious attacks by climate deniers against climate scientists. Many have now migrated to…
