It's my understanding that lawns became a status symbol because it was the rich saying, "look at me, I can afford not to grow vegetables on this plot". I've converted the lawn I inherited here to a veg plot. Lawns are tyrants, demanding to be tended. However, I'm OK with a small patch of lawn provided that it is mown with a hand mower and no chemicals are used and the daisies and moss are left in. They provide somewhere for certain birds to display and find worms, and somewhere nice to sit or sprawl in summer. Bees and other insects with short tongues like daisies because their flowers are open. And I wouldn't grow veg on a patch next to a road because of the pollution. Flowers for the bees would be much better there.
